Nick Snelling – Author of ‘How to Move Safely to Spain’
NICK SNELLING is from the UK and has been living in Spain for the past six years although he has known Spain well since before General Franco died. His mother, Dawn Stafford, is a poet living in San Pedro de Alcantara who has been here for the past forty years. So, in many respects, this is naturally his second country – and one that he has seen radically change over the past thirty-five years.
Nick lives in the stunning Valencian mountains above Gandia with his wife and two children. Both his children speak Spanish fluently and his son is now at Valencia University undertaking a media studies degree. “To our great pride, he passed his Spanish Bachillerato and Selectivo examinations with exemplary marks,” says Nick. Meanwhile, “my fifteen year old daughter is still at school. Neither has ever ‘dropped’ a year and both stand as an example of how UK children can successfully make the transition into the Spanish education system,” he adds.
Tell me a little about what you do:
I am a full time writer who has now published four books whilst also writing on-going articles for magazines and newspapers. Three of my books are about Spain, of which two are serious and one ‘Taking the Heat’ (available from Amazon) a homage to life here – which is supposed to be amusing and life enhancing!
Of course, at present, we are living through an economic crisis of epic proportions. This drove me to write ‘How to Sell your Spanish Property in a Crisis’ which provides the insider’s secrets to selling Spanish property. Together with several highly qualified professional contributors, I have produced a guide that is critical reading for anyone trying to sell their property now. It will give anyone selling now the ‘edge’ and that is vital when times are tough.
What’s your latest book about?
My latest book is ‘How to Move Safely to Spain’ which I have published as an e-book (www.movetospain-safely.com). This book is 342 pages long and twenty-six different sections. It has been written in conjunction with nine specialists (British and Spanish) – including a doctor, building surveyor, vet, lawyer, professor of classics, property expert and so on. My aim has been to write the definitive work on living in Spain and moving here. Indeed, the book covers everything from education and working in Spain through to ‘residency’, tax, Wills, Spanish property (and its construction/legal problems!), ‘land grab’, pets, property letting, the Spanish police, contract law, rights upon arrest etc. etc.
What drove you to write it?
I was driven to write ‘Move Safely’ because of the amount of ignorance and misinformation that seems to exist about Spain. Nothing is more important than clear information both for people coming to Spain and those already living here. It is a wonderful country that can provide a stunningly fine way of life. However, all too often, people buy the ‘wrong’ property or get themselves into an entirely avoidable mess.
What key advice can you give people wanting to move to Spain?
Certainly, the secret to success in moving to Spain (and living here) revolves around ‘know-how’. So: Understand that Spain has a significantly different ‘land law’ from that of the UK. Buy badly, carelessly and in ignorance and disaster will follow – as surely as night follows day. The stakes are high so know what is, and what is not, legal and safe to purchase.
Concentrate more upon a given area and what it can do for you than individual properties. All too often people buy into a lovely property only to find that the area and society around them does not provide everything necessary for long term fulfilment.
Spare neither time nor money in ensuring that you have available, at all times, a really excellent, English speaking lawyer who is absolutely independent and who will back you (and only you) and your interests at all times.
Any parting words of wisdom Mr Snelling?
Finally, in my opinion, the joy of Spain is only possible if you integrate closely with the Spanish. Few Britons do and their lives are the lesser for it. Spain has a wonderful, complex, exuberant culture. Be a part of it and life here will yield all you ever wished for – and more besides…
