  • CULTURE SPAIN (PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN) – CIUDAD RODRIGO August 30, 2010
When you walk around Ciudad Rodrigo, it is hard not think about the cold winter’s evening of January 19th in 1812, when Wellington, one of Britain’s greatest generals, ordered his army to seize Ciudad Rodrigo. After a ten day siege, two breaches in the walls of Ciudad Rodrigo had been made by sustained cannon fire and [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – AUGUST IN SPAIN IS LIKE XMAS IN THE UK! August 28, 2010
After living in Spain permanently for the past seven years, I would still say that one of the oddest experiences for me tends to be life in Spain during August!  This may seem a strange statement – but you have to appreciate how very different August is in Spain, as opposed to (say) the UK. Obviously, [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – GOTA FRÍAS IN SPAIN! August 20, 2010
The old saying states that ‘the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain’.  That, of course, may be correct – but it certainly has nothing to do with an exceptional phenomenon called a Gota Fría! Certainly, experiencing a Gota Fría (‘Cold Drop’) is something that changes any North European’s concept of rain or, indeed, storms.  [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – SPANISH HORSES AND RIDING IN SPAIN August 16, 2010
I could not resist doing a quick Post on Spanish horses and riding in Spain.  Partially, this is to please my daughter, who is obsesssed by horses and rides at every possible opportunity.  I also rather wanted to share my photograph of a stunning Fresian being shoed! Thankfully in our area (around Gandia in Valencia Province) [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – CAR ACCIDENTS IN SPAIN August 13, 2010
I was prompted to write this as some close friends of ours had their car written off yesterday.  Thankfully, they were not in the car at the time, which was parked outside their villa.  Amazingly, the Spanish lady driver of the moving car was distracted by a wasp – to such an extent that she [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – MOVING TO SPAIN (SAFELY!) August 10, 2010
If you do any research into moving to Spain then it will not take you long to find out that the process is nothing less than a minefield – most particularly if you intend buying a Spanish property.  Indeed, the more you read, the more that you will come across horror stories which are likely [...] […]
  • CULTURE SPAIN – THE FIESTA SEASON IS UPON US! August 6, 2010
Well, here we are again – at the start of August and already into the ‘fiesta season’!  This, for anyone living here, is the time when the endurance of anyone living in Spain will be tested to the limit as ‘Spanish culture’ explodes onto the streets of almost every village and town. However, before joining in, [...] […]
  • BULL FIGHTING IN SPAIN – ON ITS LAST LEGS? August 3, 2010
So, Catalonia have banned bullfighting!  This, by anyone’s standards, is something of a shock.  All of a sudden, one of the most emblematic parts of Spanish culture has dissappeared from one the greatest regions of Spain. In a way, Catalonia’s bull fighting ban appears more profound than the ban on fox hunting was in the UK.  After [...] […]
  • LIVING IN SPAIN – THE DAFT APPROACH! July 29, 2010
I have never been anything other than enthusiastic about the joys of living in Spain nor have I ever pretended to be other than utterly biased about La Drova as the place in which to live.  Indeed, I daily thank our good fortune in choosing La Drova which is, to my mind, the perfect place in [...] […]
  • SMOKING SPAIN – A REALLY TOUGH SMOKING BAN IN SPAIN, OR NOT? July 23, 2010
One of the truly joyful aspects to living in Spain revolves around the general lack of political correctness.  This is obvious in a whole number of ways, most of which are very positive.  The strictures of paranoic UK Health and Safety, for example, often seem like mysterious and alien concepts here.  Indeed, you only need [...] […]
  • SPANISH PROPERTY MARKET VALUES – WHAT IS THE TRUTH? July 20, 2010
Property in Spain, according to a recent article in The Economist, is currently over valued by 50.4%!  This shocking figure is enough to make anyone in Spain despair.  How, you have to ask, could a reputable magazine like The Economist be so wrong about the Spanish property market?  The answer, unfortunately, is that The Economist ( [...] […]
  • SPANISH CULTURE – A LIVELY LOCAL PUEBLO IS EVERYTHING! July 12, 2010
If ever there was a time to avoid writing about football then it must be now!  I imagine everyone is exhausted by the World Cup, particulary the victorious Spanish – whose productivity today will probably be in minus figures!  Certainly, I have already had two appointments cancelled due, I suspect, to late night revelry.  It is [...] […]
  • TROUBLE AHEAD FOR THE SPANISH ECONOMY July 9, 2010
Having said that I would steer clear of the Spanish economy, I felt that I should draw attention to this article recently bravely posted on www.eyeonspain.com  http://www.eyeonspain.com/spain-magazine/spain-economy-dead.aspx I think it warrants reading – although it is pretty pessimistic.  I am much the same (as any reader of this Blog will know) when it com […]
  • SPAIN, SPANISH BANKS AND THE SPANISH ECONOMY July 1, 2010
In these troubled times, it is a bore to feel the necessity to ‘harp on’ about Spain’s problems.  However, they are an unavoidable topic here in Spain – with the ‘crisis’ (the word is the same in Spanish) on everyone’s lips wherever you go.  This is hardly surprising given the horrendous rate of unemployment in [...] […]
  • SPANISH PROPERTY – HOW LONG WILL THE CRISIS LAST? June 26, 2010
Naturally, the vital question for any Spanish property owner trying to sell his home is: how long will the Spanish property crisis last?  The answer is fundamental to any attempt to sell.  It will define any sale price and perhaps whether or not it is actually worth even trying to sell a property in Spain [...] […]
  • LIFE IN SPAIN – 10 REASONS FOR NOT MOVING TO SPAIN June 16, 2010
I have never made any secret about my happiness about moving to Spain, where we (my wife and two children) have been for the past seven years.  However, I have equally never maintained that life in Spain could be compared to paradise.  Living here is certainly not for everyone.  Spanish culture (on all levels) is [...] […]
  • LIFE IN SPAIN – TEN REASONS FOR MOVING TO SPAIN June 7, 2010
I think, like everyone else, I often tend to get too wrapped up in Spanish property and the state of the Spanish property market.  It is important, undeniably, but, within it all, I think the whole reason for moving to Spain (or buying a property in Spain) – can be lost. Indeed (and this I have [...] […]
  • VILLAS IN SPAIN – THE 10 KEY FACTORS TO BUYING A SPANISH PROPERTY SAFELY May 29, 2010
Buying Spanish property can be hazardous and this is particulary true of villas in Spain.  These, as I have stated in my book ‘How to Move Safely to Spain’, can vary greatly from being completely safe and sound investments – to properties that are wholly illegal or that have very serious future liabilities. So, great care [...] […]
  • PROPERTY IN SPAIN – FINCAS, ‘LAND GRAB’ AND LAND IN SPAIN May 23, 2010
In my recent book ‘How to Move Safely to Spain’, I make the comment that if money was no object then the majority of us Britons would like to buy a property in Spain that was the Spanish equivalent of a rectory – a classy property overlooking the sea and just outside a pretty village.  [...] […]
  • SPANISH FOOTBALL – A WAY OF LIFE IN SPAIN! May 8, 2010
In Spain, football is an obsession that seems to govern (at least male!) life in Spain.  Rarely can you enter a bar, for example, without a television showing a Spanish football match or endless replays of footballing incidents.  If you think that no football is evident, then listen carefully to the ‘talking heads’ and – [...] […]
